Quadrant House is a 1960s office building with retail units at street level, located on Croydon Road in Caterham, Surrey. The building has a 115m long facade along Croydon Road, giving it a key presence on the street. Its external appearance is very utilitarian and reminiscent of modernist buildings from the first half of the 20th Century, with white rendered walls and long horizontal metal framed windows.

The building has undergone various waves of refurbishment throughout the decades, but has been in a poor state of repair and appearance for some time, both internally and externally. As the new owner of the building, Tandridge Council is investing in the refurbishment of Quadrant House to make it an attractive place to work in. The project encompasses the upgrading of all internal communal areas and facilities, including new WCs, kitchenettes, lighting, flooring, signage/wayfinding and joinery design. The external works comprise facade redecoration, roof edge repairs, and the replacement of the existing signage and 1990s canopies with new bold signage to give the building a stronger identity on the street.

Our design draws inspiration from mid-century modern interiors and 1950s/60s civic architecture. The main themes are openness, natural light, pared down interiors and simplicity of materials, animated with splashes of colour, texture and richness. As part of our initial inspections of the building, we discovered an original beautiful terrazzo floor under the existing 1990s carpet, which our design proposes to bring back to life within the stairwells and lobbies.
