Funded by the National Lottery LEAP set out to transform hidden local places and spaces for families with young children. The programme worked with eleven existing community facilities in Lambeth which included Jubilee Children's Centre. Design briefs were co-developed with local parents, community groups and early years practitioners. This approach resulted in a family of highly bespoke and diverse design interventions which respond to local needs. Key objectives across all projects were to create community infrastructure that is visible and welcoming, supports connectedness and healthy living and to invest in families with young children.
Jubilee Children’s Centre was enhanced to improve visibility and create a welcoming entrance with green glazed brick cladding and playful curved canopy. Jubilee’s extension took the form of a pavilion which together with the existing centre frames an improved garden space. The architectural form is a playful take on the architecture of the school building. Improved health facilities along with a parent’s room and kitchen were added to the oversubscribed centre.
